Cost, Speed, and Reliability Tradeoffs between N+1 UPS Configurations
نویسنده
چکیده
There is an increasing trend towards N+1 UPS architectures – rather than 2N – as IT fault tolerance through software continues to improve. There are two common ways N+1 can be achieved: paralleling multiple unitary UPSs together or deploying a single UPS frame with multiple internal modules configured for N+1 redundancy. In this paper, we quantify key tradeoffs between an internal “modular” redundant UPS and parallel redundant UPSs, and show a 27% capital cost savings and a 1-2 week decrease in deployment time when internal redundancy is deployed. We also discuss the importance of fault tolerance within the UPS to ensure availability, reliability, and maintainability needs are met. Revision 2 White Paper 234

Mission Reliability Estimation for Repairable Robot Teams
Many of the most promising applications for mobile robots require very high reliability. The current generation of mobile robots is, for the most part, highly unreliable. The few mobile robots that currently demonstrate high reliability achieve this reliability at a high financial cost. In order for mobile robots to be more widely used, it will be necessary to find ways to provide high mission ...
متن کاملModeling and Analysis of Availability of Datacenter Power Infrastructure
Realizing highly available datacenter power infrastructure is an extremely expensive proposition with costs more than doubling as we move from three 9’s (Tier-1) to six 9’s (Tier-4) of availability. Existing approaches only consider the cost/availability trade-off for a restricted set of power infrastructure configurations, relying mainly on component redundancy. A number of additional knobs su...
متن کاملSimultaneous Allocation Of Reliability & Redundancy Using Minimum Total Cost Of Ownership Approach
This paper addresses the mixed integer reliability redundancy allocation problems to determine simultaneous allocation of optimal reliability and redundancy level of components based on three objective goals. System engineering principles suggest that the best design is the design that maximizes the system operational effectiveness and at the same time minimizes the total cost of ownership (TCO...
متن کاملDesign of a Low-Cost Data Communications/R.F. System for use with Low Earth Orbiting Store and Forward Satellites
The functional requirements and system overview for a low cost data communications system for small satellite use are presented. Tradeoffs of system parameters will be discussed such as: cost, transmission speed, power consumption, spectrum useage, and system complexity. Link calculations at 137 MHz, with transmission speeds of 9600 BPS, monopole antennas, and a 50kHz bandwidth show that adequa...
متن کاملHow to Improve High-frequency Bus Service Reliability through Scheduling
This paper outlines a scheduling process for improving high-frequency bus service reliability based on a model which uses Automatic Vehicle Location and Automatic Passenger Count data. Developing a schedule for high-frequency bus routes involves balancing the costs to the passengers and the cost to the transit agency. Passengers are interested in short travel times and short, reliable waiting t...
